XPIZZA Blends Food, Wine & Underground Radio Station To Revitalize Lower Manhattan

Walking into the 450 sqft XPIZZA storefront in Manhattan’s South Street Seaport, you’re likely to be greeted by one of its 20 resident DJs playing hard underground techno in place of a cashier.  But look behind the DJ booth, and you’ll find a Square terminal serving up beer, wine, and a Roman-style pizza program from Biga Bite’s Giovanni Barbieri, who is also a partner in the venture. Founded last summer by artist and writer Cristiano Grimaldi, XPIZZA aims to be a cultural hub for multidisciplinary art first and foremost, and a pizza parlor second. All of its daily events are free to the public from 5-11pm, or sometimes midnight, supported entirely by its food and beverage sales. The concept is the next evolution of online radio stations like The Lot Radio in Brooklyn, Teder.FM in Tel Aviv, NTS in London, and HÖR in Berlin, branching out beyond DJs to podcasters and photographers. Like the aforementioned stations, XPIZZA lives online as much as it does offline, and has streamed a thousand shows to its YouTube channel as well as its Mixcloud live stream to date.
