Inside A Nonprofit D2C Online Farmers' Market Program That Helps Local Economies Thrive

There have long been many attempts to bring the experience of shopping at local farmers markets online. On the B2B front, Barn2door and Grazecart are focused on building “Shopify for local food suppliers” while many B2C online delivery services like Farm To People (NY), Good Eggs (CA), and most recently, Feed (CA, fka Popcorn) focus on sourcing fresh items from local purveyors. Naturally, most of these niche B2B players have failed to take off while many B2C services have closed markets, pivoted, or run out of capital. But few, if any, traditional farmers markets have sought to tackle this problem from the inside out. Now, a new nonprofit initiative from SEE-LA called eat! seeks to bring its eight Los Angeles farmers’ markets online, unlocking pickup and delivery across a handful of its merchants. The service is funded by the USDA’s Farmers Market Promotion Program and is intended to improve access to nutritious local food to individuals with limited resources to physically access their nearest farmers’ market.
